From Julie McMahon:
Get ready for the 5th annual LaSalle II Healthy Family Fest on Friday, October 23 from 3 pm to 5 pm. The Healthy Family Fest is a FREE event brought to you by the PTO’s Education and Wellness Committee for the entire LaSalle II School community. It focuses on healthy eating, exercise, environmental stewardship, mind/body connections and other aspects of wellness, in a fun-filled, hands-on festival environment. There will be lots of movement for all ages. We will have exercise and cooking demos available, so you can get some samples and healthy living ideas.
We kick off the Fest at 3 pm with a school dance, one the kids have been “secretly” working on in PE. New this year we will have our first ever LaSalle II Ninja Warrior, an obstacle course for all ages to enjoy. Show us your speed and agility as you push and pull your way through the obstacle to become the first LSII Ninja Warrior. After that, participate in our mini-classes of yoga and soccer, they are sure to keep you moving. If you need a little breather from all of the excitement, stop over for a chair massage or decorate a mini pumpkin, then get your hands dirty with composting and worms or sprucing up our school’s own garden.
Parents come hungry, I know your kids will be, because there will be an abundance of wholesomely delicious goodies to sample. Watch as kids whip up their own snacks at the Kids’ Table with our own Swiss chard picked from the school garden. Stop at the veggie appreciation table and challenge your taste buds by trying a veggie that is new to you. Or enjoy some healthy all natural teas or fruit kabobs. And if that is not enough, we will have a taco truck and crepe cart available to purchase small food items at the event.
To round out the event there will be vendors on hand to educate and inform you about preventive medicine and how you can become an active participant in your health.
One of our parents, Diane Lawson, will be providing free blood pressure screenings. Physicians Immediate Care Center will be hosting a first aid table. And last but not least, a Walgreen’s pharmacist will be on hand to administer flu shots. So get a jump on flu season and get vaccinated!

Also, help your kids express their wholesome selves during Wellness Week leading up to Healthy Family Fest. We will have a fun, online Wellness Journal this year, which will showcase school participation at the end of the week. Follow the link, and have fun filling it in everyday with your children. Remember, it’s not intended to create more work for anyone, but to get families thinking about health on a broad level…not only nutrition and exercise, but also sleep, laughter, positive relationships, feeling useful and proud, etc. Please note that there are a few additional links for using the journal. One is for fun and healthy recipes for kids to make with their families and another is for using the Hot Air Balloon Guided Meditation…
