The 3rd Graders in Room 102 have been learning all about fractions. They created different visuals to represent them including flip books and number lines.
This month we hosted our Chinese exchange students from the Beijing Foreign Languages School. Our exchange students visited City Hall, the Shedd Aquarium, the John Hancock building and more! A huge thank to Ms. Aquino for all of her hard work in planning and organizing this exchange. Also, a sincere thank you to all of our families who were gracious enough to open their homes and host a student. This program would not be possible without you!
Room 103 is finishing a unit on colors! For the past month we have been learning to identify colors in a number of different ways. We have read books about colors and practiced identifying both the color and the object while we read. In our classroom, students have the opportunity to answer orally or by pointing to pictures so that every student has the opportunity to participate.
We also created a collage for each color that was made into a book that students will be able to take home so they can practice their colors at home, as well! Students used crayons, markers, Dot Painters, and scissors and glue to create their collages and they had a lot of fun making art while also working on their fine motor skills!
We all worked together as a classroom (both AM and PM sessions) to create a collaborative art project. We used our handprints to make a rainbow that hangs is hanging in our classroom to remind us how beautiful it is when we work together!
The Science Olympiad Team participated in the Chicago Invitational on Saturday, February 4th at Westinghouse College Prep.

Second grade started the new year with some reflection time. Students reflected on their progress so far in this school year. They also reflected on friendships and achievements. We discussed kindness and how we can make positive choices to impact our whole classroom.
Room 202 worked as a class to form goals for all of us as a class, which include picking up things that we see on the floor, like pencils and markers so they do not get wasted and also closing our locker doors to keep the hallway clean. We discussed taking pride in our school and classroom and working as a community to keep it a great place to learn and have fun each day.
In addition to discussing our goals and resolutions as a class, students also had time to reflect independently. Students worked on an activity where they brainstormed and wrote down their dreams and aspirations for the year 2017. We will reflect throughout the remainder of the school year on these dreams and goals.
Over Winter Break a group of LaSalle II staff, including several members of the special education department, went to a volunteer session at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The goal for the day was to repackage large quantities of food that had been donated from food drives over the holidays into smaller portions. Our team was able to process 15,500 pounds of food over the course of 3 hours. This equates to roughly 12,900 meals that were distributed to those in need. We had an absolute blast giving back to the Chicago community and hope to turn this into a monthly adventure. Kindergarten students have been studying parts of the body. We learned a traditional children’s song, Juanito. Students also drew and labeled monsters!
Third grade students are studying markets and stores found in Panamá, their country of study. During December, they will be creating signs and practicing vocabulary in order to complete a global simulation project where they “visit” one another’s stores to ask about and purchase items.
Fourth grade students are currently delving deeper into their study of Argentina through an exploration of the major landmarks and geographic features of different provinces. Students are researching a province of their choosing and will write a postcard as a creative way to demonstrate their findings.
In 8th Grade Science, students are gaining conceptual understanding of the properties of sound and wave interference. As they investigate how a disturbance that travels through different mediums transfers energy into sound waves, they are utilizing their senses (touch, sight, hearing) to gather information about the factors that affect the speed of sound.
As students discussed the differences between music and noise, they analyzed how frequency affected pitch through lab investigation. They have begun to experiment with making music, changing the pitch of sound, by creating their own musical instruments. They will complete a lab report to conclude their investigations, and maybe play a tune for you upon request!
