6th Grade Field Trip to the EPA

The entire 6th grade class went on a field trip to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Laboratory. While there, we got to meet the director of the lab and many of the scientists that work there. Mrs. Larry and her co-workers gave us a wonderful tour of the lab. In each section of the lab, we got to meet a scientist that works there. The scientists explained to us what they do and they demonstrated how they use their equipment. The students got to apply what was learned in class to answer questions the scientists posed and to converse with them. At the end of the tour, the 6th graders, had the opportunity to perform two experiments in the EPA’s lab. The first experiment was chromatography or a separation of colors. The second experiment was a semi volatiles laboratory in which the students experiment with the weights of different elements. A great time was had by all!
